SPELLING CONCEPTS
Concept: -or, -er, -or endings (unaccented final syllables)
Use your Daily 5 notebook - spelling section- to do a word sort with the words on our spelling list, without cutting up words as in the example in the video below. Please note the teacher's work with the dictionary to show the syllables. Word parts in bold or capital letters are said the most forcefully in a word, which is called 'accented'. -er, -or, -ar are unaccented parts at the end of the word. Concept:
Soft/Hard
g and c. Rules: If a g is followed by an e, I, or y, it makes a soft
sound. If a g is followed by an a or an
o, or a consonant, it makes a hard sound.
If a c is followed by an e, I or y, it makes a soft sound. If a c is followed by an a, u, or a
consonant, it makes a hard sound.
Concept: Silent Letters

Concept: Plural nouns. Rules: For most nouns, add s. For nouns ending in ch, sh, x, or s, add es. For nouns ending in y, change the y to I and add es. For some nouns ending in long o, add es.
Concept: “I” before e except after c or when sounding like aye as is neighbor and weigh.

Concept 5: Adding suffixes with final y. If there is a vowel before the y, just add the suffix. If there is a consonant before the y, change the y to i and add suffix.

Concept 4: Concept: Keep the final silent e when adding suffixes that start with a consonant. Drop the e when adding suffixes that begin with a vowel.
Concept 3: Double the final consonant before adding a suffix to maintain the short vowel sound. Do not double the consonant if there are already two consonants in a row. Do not double the consonant if the suffix begins with a consonant. (-ment, -ness, -ly).
