Ms. Belle’s “Buter” Bread (Honey Oatmeal Bread)
This is the bread machine recipe for the bread shared during our yeast lesson in science. It makes a rather small (short) loaf, so you may want to 1 ½ X the recipe. Great possibilities for math…
Our family calls it buter bread because butter was misspelled in the original recipe!
7.5 oz water (warm)
3 Tablespoons honey
2 cups bread flour
½ cup oat bran
½ cup rolled oats
1.5 Tablespoons dry milk
1 ¼ teaspoons salt
1 ½ T butter (divided into 4 equal pieces)
2 teaspoons yeast
In my bread machine, ingredients are put in according to the order listed above. Salt and butter are put at the corners. Yeast is put in the middle. Use a regular cycle on the bread machine.
If you don’t have a bread machine, you may want to find a recipe for oatmeal bread online. Kneading is fun, and we learned about the science of yeast and gluten in class.
This bread is naturally dense, due to the oats. It makes good toasting bread. We didn’t get to find out, because almost 50 of us shared a taste of the one loaf today!
